DECORA

Please read this first

This is a work in progress still so keep that in mind pls!!

When someone says "Japanese street fashion" or uses the term "Harajuku fashion" the first thing that comes to mind for most is Decora fashion or Decora kei. The bright colors, overflow of accessories and fun layering makes this a really memorable style.

What is decora?

The main focus of decora is, as stated previously, fun colors, accessories and layering, many describe the style as "dressing in what makes you happy". What that means can be different for each person. Some take this as an opportunity to decorate themselves with nostalgic toys that they have turned into necklaces, hairclips, ect. Others see this as a chance to wear, head to toe, merchandise of their favourte character. Unlike Gyaru and Jirai Kei, Decora is a style based subculture and not a lifestyle. To be classified as someone who dresses decora you basically only have to have the accessories and layering, and if bright colors arent your thing you can do a monochrome look or even a black and white coord! Because of this decora is one of the most flexible styles within J fashion and a great starting point for someone who is interested in Harajuku fashion.

History

Decora started gaining popularity during the 1990s when Harajuku

Another very important factor in the rise of this fashion style is the, now ex-, pop idol tomoe shinohara. Her music and personal style had a very big impact on the style we today know as decora.
